  4. WHAT'S NEW
  5. ----------
  6. Shorthand Version 4.0 is designed to run under Windows 95.
  7. Shorthand Version 4.0 will also work with Windows 3.1 if you
  8. have the Microsoft Win32s drivers installed on your system.

  10. If you are using Windows 3.1, you should use Shorthand Version 3.0
  11. which may be available on the bulletin board from which you
  12. got this file (look for the file SH30.ZIP or SHORTHND.ZIP).

  18. INTRODUCTION
  19. ------------
  20. Shorthand is a typing productivity tool designed to work concurrently
  21. with most Microsoft Windows applications.  Just as a stenographer 
  22. uses shorthand notation to represent words and phrases, Shorthand 
  23. allows you to represent a string of text with a much shorter 
  24. abbreviation or keyword.  Instead of typing the text string, 
  25. you type the shorter keyword and Shorthand takes care of typing 
  26. the text string into your application.  For example, you can
  27. represent the phrase "as soon as possible" with the keyword "asap."
  28. The next time you need to type the phrase "as soon as possible" into
  29. your favorite Windows word processor, you simply type "\asap", press 
  30. the Enter key, and Shorthand types "as soon as possible" right into 
  31. your Windows word processor.  The leading "\" is a hot key character 
  32. that signals Shorthand that you are about to type a keyword.  (You 
  33. can change the hot key character to another character if you wish.)  
  34. Shorthand works with most Windows word processors, text editors and 
  35. even text fields in most Windows dialog boxes.  A good illustration 
  36. of the flexibility of Shorthand is the common (and tedious) procedure 
  37. of entering e-mail addresses.  With Shorthand, you first enter the
  38. e-mail address and a unique keyword into Shorthand's dictionary.  
  39. The next time you need to type the address, just activate Shorthand, 
  40. type the keyword and Shorthand will type the address for you!

  44. This version of Shorthand is a shareware program that can be freely
  45. uploaded to any public bulletin board such as Compuserve, Prodigy,
  46. etc.  Shareware distributors may distribute this program for a small
  47. fee to cover their distribution costs.

  98. Copy the files to a directory on your hard disk. The file called
  99. "SHORTHND.EXE" is the executable file.

  101. RUNNING SHORTHAND
  102. -----------------
  103. The application name is "SHORTHND.EXE".  You can run SHORTHND.EXE by 
  104. starting the Windows Explorer and double-clicking on the file 
  105. "SHORTHND.EXE".

  107. You may want to create a folder and icons for Shorthand.
  108. Please refer to the Windows User Manual for instructions on how to
  109. do this.
